Rim to Rim 2024
Hike Week Guide

We are so pumped for this team to take on one of the seven natural wonders of the world to hike the Grand Canyon! 

 

Tuesday, October 15th

Arrival & Dinner

11:00 am: Team arrives at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport
11:45am: Team Lunch/ Parking Lot Picnic Party (Waiting and Greeting all teammates)
12:00 pm: Caravan in team vans to South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park (3.5-4 hour drive)
4:00 pm: Check in at Yavapai Lodge & Rest/Relax
5:00 pm: Meet up and walk to South Rim for viewing and pictures
6:15 pm: Welcome Dinner at Yavapai Lodge Dining Hall- *Be sure to bring one of your dinner vouchers*
8:00 pm: Relax, star gaze, early bedtime (Pro tip: download a ‘Star Gazing’ app on your phone, the night sky in Grand Canyon National Park is a sight to see)

 

Wednesday, October 16th

Sightseeing & Team Dinner

7:00 am - 8:30 am: Breakfast at Yavapai Lodge Dining Hall- On your own! *Be sure to bring one of your breakfast vouchers*
8:45 am: Campfire gathering- worship, devo, and reflection time
10:00 am: Regroup at Yavapai Lodge (relax & refresh)
11:15 am: Van drive to Desert View Watch Tower- epic team picture & picnic lunch
2:00 pm: Free-time, packing, and bag/equipment check
4:50 pm: Drive to Team Dinner
5:15 pm: Team Dinner
8:00 pm: Last minute prep, Flat Smokey's & FB push, early bedtime

 

Thursday, October 17th 

Group 1 (Blue Team): Hike Day

4:30 am: Wake-up, coffee, tea, water, snacks
5:00 am: Shuttle to South Kaibab
5:15 am: Team picture at Trailhead & begin hike (with head lamps)
6:35 am: Most beautiful sunrise of your life
11:00 am: Lunch at Colorado River & Phantom Ranch
11:45 am: Begin hike up Bright Angel
6:00 pm: Cross finish line at Bright Angel Trailhead (up & out of the canyon!)
6:10 pm: Finish Line Celebration

Thursday, October 17th 

Group 2 (Orange Team): Rest Day (Choose your own adventure! See options below)

7:00 am - 10:30 am: Breakfast at Yavapai Lodge Dining Hall - On your own! *Be sure to bring one of your breakfast vouchers*
10:30 am - 2:30 pm: Optional activities, both staff-led and self-guided, are available. See the tab ‘Rest Day Agendas’ to review some various opportunities and ideas.
3:00 pm: Free Time, Final Prep (all things daypacks!), and Afternoon Nap.
5:00 pm - 9:00 pm: Dinner at the Yavapai Lodge Dining Hall - On your own! *Be sure to bring your dinner voucher*
5:45 pm - 7:45 pm: Optional Finish Line Celebration Party (for Day 1 Finishers)!
8:00 pm: Last minute prep, Flat Smokey's & FB push, early bedtime for Day 2 Hikers!!

 

Friday, October 18th

Departure

8:30 am: Team Sendoff Celebration
9:30 am: Check-out & load vans
10:00 am: Drive to Sky Harbor International Airport
3:00 pm: Drop off and goodbyes in Phoenix

Airport Meet-up Location

Airport meet up location: Cell phone lot at 44th street and Washington.

From the airport terminals, hop onto the PHX Sky Train, and alight at Valley Metro Rail (also known as 44th Street & Washington station), the last stop on the line. We will see you there by 11am, Tuesday, Oct 18th.

Hiking Information

We will begin the hike at South Kaibab Trailhead, hike down the trail till we get to the Colorado River. Just before we get to Bright Angel campground, we will get on the River Trail, and hike back up the Bright Angel Trailhead.

Option 1 (Staff/Captain Led): Depart at 10:30 am - Return at 2:30pm

Take a field trip outside the park to Tusayan, AZ! Go to Grand Canyon Visitor’s Center for souvenirs, gifts, and to get your NPS passport stamped. Then go to the IMAX theater (located on site) and enjoy a showing of ‘Rivers of Time’. Afterward, you’ll pick one of the many available restaurants in Tusayan, to enjoy an afternoon meal with friends.

OPTION 2 (Staff/Captain Led): Depart at 10:30 am - Return at 2:30pm

Stay inside the park and go to the Grand Canyon Conservancy & Park Store where you can buy some gifts, souvenirs, and also get your NPS passport stamped! Then, rent a bike from Bright Angel Bicycles and go for a leisurely ‘shake-out’ bike ride along the South Rim and enjoy amazing outlook points and photo opportunities. Finish your outing with a healthy lunch at one of the many restaurants located inside the park on the South Rim.

OPTION 3 (Self-Guided):

Choose your own adventure and go at your own pace for the day by combining any of the available activities below.

Things to do ‘outside’ Grand Canyon National Park:

1. Grand Canyon Visitor Center: This is one of several ‘Visitor’s Centers’ and is located outside the park in Tusayan, AZ. It's also where the IMAX Movie theater is located. You can go see 'Rivers of Time' which plays every hour, beginning on the half hour. Approx: 40 minutes in length.

2. Lunch in Tusayan (click restaurants for all the options, scroll to the bottom).

Things to do ‘inside’ Grand Canyon National Park:

3. Visit the Grand Canyon Conservancy Visitor Center Park Store: Click HERE (Gifts, souvenirs, & get your passport stamped) - *Located across the plaza from the Grand Canyon Visitor Center (South Rim), which is closed for employee training during our time in the canyon.*

4. Rent a bike and take a leisurely and scenic ride! Bright Angel Bicycles and Café *Located adjacent to the Grand Canyon Visitor Center (South Rim) which is closed for employee training during our time in the canyon. *

5. Self-Guided Walking Tour of Historic South Rim Village: Full Steam Ahead. Download the NPS App to listen, walk, and enjoy*. Distance - about ½ mile through the historic village, which is action-packed and includes all the following sites: Verkamp's Visitor Center, The Train Depot, Hope House, El Tovar, Kachina & Thunderbird Lodges, Bright Angel Lodge, Lookout Studio, Kolb Studio, and Edge of Vastness!!

6. Yavapai Geology Museum visit the museum and then take a leisurely walk along the Trail of Time, a 2.83 mile paved path along the South Rim.
